Abstract:
The Lumen One Abnormal Psychology course is designed to prepare students to think objectively and compassionately about individuals experiencing mental illness. The course content thoroughly aligns with The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and includes the most current data. Students will engage with strategies to: Apply the biopsychosocial model as a framework for understanding major concepts Reinforce concepts by watching videos, analyzing examples, and examining case studies Identify the diagnostic criteria for each psychological disorder Differentiate specific aspects of treatment methods by hearing from real people experiencing mental illness Participate in collaborative active learning activities, including some where they role play as therapist and client The course utilizes interactive content and practice with immediate feedback to maximize student understanding and retention. Every learning outcome includes practice questions that will help engage students to test their understanding. The instructor resources package is robust and includes easy-to-use, engaging slide decks, and in-class activities, with suggested modifications based on the modality of the course.
